Technology and Intellectual Property
Technology
Technology law is simply a term that brings together the areas of law that apply to a technology based transaction or dispute. The term loosely describes the various principles of law that relate to the use of technology in commerce and principally includes elements of contract law and regulatory provisions affecting the parties' freedom to contract as they wish.
A typical example of our work in this area would be advising clients on the contracts for procurement of computer and communications hardware and software. We also regularly advise clients on the set up of their websites and the contracts required for their online trading activities.
Intellectual Property
Intellectual property (IP) such as copyright, patents and trademarks are asset which have traditionally been the focus of knowledge-based businesses. We now find that almost all our clients are IT-enabled companies and require advice on IP. The exploitation, protection and enforcement of IP rights especially for high-tech businesses and businesses who heavily rely on their branding is a key aspect of a company's measure of success or failure.
Typical examples of our work in this area are advising on IP licensing and distribution contracts and brand protection generally.
